BRITTEN Peter Grimes
The premiere of Peter Grimes at Sadler's Wells in June 1945 was a landmark for
Britten and the history of British music. Adapted from Crabbe's poem 'The Borough',
the libretto portrays the persecution of an outcast in a fictional village based
on Britten's home town, Aldeburgh. This is the second set of performances at
St Endellion. No-one present at the first, in 1994, can forget the build-up of
claustrophobic intensity as the opera unfolded in our windswept north-Cornish church
The 2008 performances are marked by the important role debuts of Mark Padmore,
Sally Matthews, Roderick Williams and Matthew Brook, in a cast chosen from the very
best of British operatic talent. The performances will be conducted by Richard
Hickox, CBE, Music Director of Opera Australia at the Sydney Opera House
